ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this in-vitro study was to investigate the effects of two different fast sintering protocols and two different surface treatments on transmission of multilayer monolithic zirconia. Material and Methods: 40 multi-layer monolithic zirconia (Katana ML, Kuraray, Hattersheim am Main, Germany) square shape specimens with a 10x10 mm dimension at a thickness of 1 mm divided into 2 groups according to the sintering protocols, fast (HS) (1510°C for 30 min) and super-fast (SH) (1580°C for 10 min). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were taken after sintering. Afterwards, the samples were divided into 2 sub-groups according to the applied surface treatments (glaze, polishing). The transmission values of the samples were measured by using LED light source and power-meter and the surface roughness values were measured by using a profilometer. The results obtained in this study were evaluated by using Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: In this research, the highest transmission values were determined from the samples of HS group. The enamel layers of the samples in all groups were found to have the highest transmission values than the other layers. The highest value was determined in the enamel layer of HS glazed group (17.6%). It was determined that the glaze treatment applied to the surface of the samples was more effective in obtaining smoothness compared to the polishing application and the amount of transmission increased with increasing smoothness value. Conclusion: While the optical property required for the aesthetic success of zirconia enhance by the super-fast sintering process, the glaze process applied to the surface increases this development.
