ABSTRACT
Objective: To reveal the relationship between the care burden and perceived stress and perceived social support of the patients relatives receiving hemodialysis treatment. Material and Methods: A face-to-face questionnaire was applied to 269 patients relatives between 20 February and 20 March, 2021. The questionnaire consists of 56 questions in total, 8 of which are about socio-demographic characteristics and 48 of which about Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied. Spearman correlation test is utilised to measure the relation between scales and linear regression analysis was performed to find the degree of the relationship. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: The average care burden was 25.40 [standard deviation (SD)=12.71]. The care burden of singles and those with lower education and income levels was found higher. The care burden was higher for the patients relatives receiving hemodialysis treatment for a shorter period of time. It was seen that the perceived social support comes mostly from family members (mean=23.73, SD=6.88) and the mean of multidimensional perceived social support is high (mean=63.31, SD=620.12). The mean of the perceived stress scale was found to be at a moderate level with 26.20 (SD=12.71). There was a significant and positive relationship between caregiving burden and perceived stress variable (rspearman=0.25;p<0.001). There was a significant and negative correlation between caregiving burden and multidimensional perceived social support family subdimension (rspearman=-0.20; p<0.001). A negative significant relationship was found between perceived stress and all subdimensions of multidimensional perceived support. Conclusion: While delivering care services, patient relatives should be taken into consideration as well as patients. It is recommended to plan and implement studies for education, information and social support of patient relatives.
