ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of video-assisted education on hip function and activities of daily living (ADL) after surgery in patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR). Material and Methods: The sample of this randomized controlled clinical trial study consisted of 60 patients who underwent THR. While the experimental group (n=30) received in video-assisted education, the control group (n=30) received routine nursing care. The patients' hip functions were measured using the Oxford Hip Score and their ADL scores were measured using the ADL Scale before surgery, on discharge day and 1st month after surgery. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, independent-samples t-test, analysis of variance with repeated measures, Bonferroni test. Results: The hip functions of the patients in the study group before THR and on the day of discharge were significantly higher than their hip functions 1st month after THR, and the hip functions of the patients in the control group on the day of discharge were significantly higher than their hip functions before and 1st month after THR (p<0.05). While the THR of the patients in the experimental group before surgery had worse hip function than the control group, their hip function on the day of discharge and 1st month after surgery increased significantly (p<0.05). In comparison with the ADL of the control group, the ADL performance of the patients in the experimental group increased significantly on the day of discharge and 1st month after surgery (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study demonstrated that video-assisted education improved hip functions and ADL in patients undergoing THR.
