ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to examine whether the alexithymia, empathy and childhood traumatic experience levels of male convicts in the penitentiary institution due to crimes against sexual inviolability and property differ and whether childhood traumas affect alexithymia and empathy scores. Material and Methods: A total of 317 male convicts, 156 of whom were convicted of crimes against sexual inviolability and 161 of crimes against property between the ages of 18-71, voluntarily participated in the study. The data obtained were evaluated based on the scores obtained by the participants from the personal information form, the A Alexithymia Scale, the Basic Empathy Scale and the Childhood Psychological Trauma Scale. Within the scope of the research, the independent sample t-test was used to calculate the differences between the groups. Relationships between scale scores were examined by Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: In the study, it was found that convicts convicted of sexual crimes were exposed to sexual abuse more than those convicted of crimes against property and developed alexithymic characteristics. The alexithymia and empathy scores of these 2 groups of convicts and the alexithymia scores of physical and emotional neglect. Emotional neglect was found to predict empathy scores. Conclusion: It is thought that working with convicts of crimes against assets, about which a limited number of studies have been made in the research literature, will make an important contribution to the literature. In the light of the findings, it is thought that childhood sexual abuse and alexithymic characteristics may be risk factors for sexual crime and the study will be an important resource for rehabilitation and recovery activities to be carried out in penal institutions for convicts.

Keywords: Childhood traumas; alexithymia; empathy; crimes against sexual inviolability; crimes against property
