ABSTRACT
Conventional caries removal technique is to remove decay with a steel or tungsten carbide burr attached to the micromotor after preparation of access cavity with a aerator. In the conventional caries removal technique, increasing caries removal speed causes destruction of dentin and removes dentin without distinguishing infected or healthy. As a result of these disadvantages, minimally invasive dentistry philosophy has emerged which makes restorative treatment possible with minimal damage to dental tissues. Minimally invasive dentistry is a selective caries removal method, in which dentin with remineralization potential, is preserved as much as possible and highly infected and irreversibly denatured dentin are removed. Chemomechanical caries removal technique is a technique in which the infected dentin is removed by softening with a chemical agent. In this technique, the discomfort caused by the use of burrs and local anesthesia is eliminated, healthy dental tissue is protected, and the patient is treated more comfortably. Various agents have been introduced in the method from past to present chemomechanical caries removal, but only a few have entered clinical practice. The chemomechanical caries removal method is based on the concept of minimally invasive dentistry. This technique is used in fearful patients to protect healthy dental tissue and remove dental caries in sufficient quantity without using a rotary instrument. In this review, chemomechanical decay techniques and current developments will be discussed.
