ABSTRACT
Objective: It is known that the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) applications is increasing in the pediatric population as well as in adults. In this study, it was aimed to determine alternative treatment methods applied by families of children with respiratory tract infections. Material and Methods: The sample of the study was taken from the parents of children aged 0-18 who were diagnosed with ''respiratory infection'' at 3 Family Health Centers with complaints such as ''fever, cough, sore throat'' between 15.02.2015- 15.05.2016 (n=388). Ethics committee, institutional and parental consent was obtained in the study, data were collected with a questionnaire, and descriptive tests and chi-square test were used for evaluation. Statistical significance was accepted as p˂0.05. Results: It was determined that 77.1% (n=299) of the families participating in the study used nonpharmacological applications in the treatment of respiratory tract infection symptoms, and 75.9% used CAM before drug treatment. In high fever, 42.3% of the parents took a shower, warm age, 19.6% of them dropped ocean/sea water in nasal congestion, they preferred honey mixes (23.0%) and molasses mixes (21.9%) in coughing, and 15.4% had their children in wheezing. It has been determined that they prefer massaging or putting a cloth on their back. A statistically significant difference was found between the age of the child and the condition of having acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) in the last year and the use of CAM applications (p <0.05). Conclusion: It has been determined that the rate of using CAM method in children of families is high in ARTI symptoms. It may be suggested that pediatric nurses evaluate nondrug methods used by parents in their children in the community they serve, and provide necessary education and counseling to families.
