ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim is to determine the effect of BMI on the problems experienced by underwent lumbar disc herniation surgery patients. Material and Methods: The study is descriptive, cross-sectional, and cause-effect. The sample of the study consisted of 39 patients who came to the clinic due to lumbar disc herniation between January 2016-June 2016 and met the sample criteria. The data were collected using personal information forms and the visual analog scale. Data were evaluated using numbers, percentages, means, standard deviations and chi-square test, Fisher's exact chi-square test and p<0.05 was regarded as significant. Results: More than half of the patients who were included in the research were male (69.2%) and married (79.5%). It was found that 71.8% BMI of patients was above normal and 56.4% were not exercising regularly. It was concluded that there was a significant relationship between BMI, low back pain, insomnia, weakness and fatigue, fear of movement, constipation and total number of problems (p<0.05). Conclusion: A relationship was found between the patients' BMI, low back pain during discharge and the total number of problems. In patients overweight and obesity the high rate of low back pain and other problems after lumbar disc herniation surgery require addressing this situation in patient care.

Keywords: Intervertebral disc displacement; visual analog scale; body mass index; experienced problems
