ABSTRACT
Objective: It is aimed to determine the characteristics of childhood forensic death cases in Denizli and the most common causes of death according to age groups, together with risk factors, and to discuss preventable causes of death in the light of literature. Material and Methods: External examination and autopsy records, toxicological and histopathological examination reports of the cases in the 0-18 age group who underwent autopsy between January 2014 and December 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Data on age, gender, cause of death, and origin of death of the cases were evaluated. The cases were grouped according to age as under 1 year, 1-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years and 15-18 years. Results: Autopsies and death examinations were performed on 210 children during the 5-year period. It was determined that the mean age of the cases was 8.94±7.02. According to age distribution, 76 (36.2%) cases was between 15-18 years old. Accidental deaths were observed, with the most frequent traffic accident (35.2%). Considering the causes of death, the most common deaths were due to blunt traumatic injuries (40%). Conclusion: It is noteworthy that the majority of childhood forensic autopsy cases evaluated in our study have accidents that can be prevented with certain precautions and interventions. In addition, it has been observed that deaths originating from homicide and suicide are at a substantial level. It is important to carry out comprehensive medicolegal examination of child deaths and to analyze these data at regular intervals and to evaluate this issue in order to reduce and prevent preventable child deaths.
