ABSTRACT
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of aerobic exercise on cortisol and thyroid hormones in rats with experimental diabetes. Material and Methods: In the study, 36 Wistar Albino rats, 6 weeks old, were used. The animals were divided into 4 groups as Control (C), Diabetes (D), Exercise (E) and Diabetes+Exercise (DE) with similar body weights. A single dose of 60 mg/kg streptozotocin solution was injected intraperitoneally into groups D and DE. E and DE groups exercised on a treadmill for 4 weeks at a speed of 20 m/min and for 45 minutes per day. The sera obtained at the end of the experiment were determined in accordance with the commercial kit (Abbott) protocol. Results: When the data obtained at the end of the experiment were examined, it was determined that the glucose values of the D and DE groups were significantly higher than the control groups (C and E) (p<0.05), but the values in the DE group were decreased compared to the D group. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3 and T4 levels in D group decreased compared to C and E groups (p<0.05). Cortisol levels between groups were the lowest in group E and highest in group D. It was determined that serum TSH levels in the DE group increased significantly compared to the D group and showed similarity to the control groups (C and E) (p<0.05). Again, it was determined that T3, T4 levels in the DE group tended to increase compared to the D group. Conclusion: It is seen that aerobic exercise lasting 4 weeks in diabetics is very effective in both improving glucose metabolism and increasing cortisol and thyroid hormone levels.
