ABSTRACT
Midwifery is one of the oldest women's professions in Turkey. Progress has been made on the way to becoming a profession by opening midwifery undergraduate programs in 1996, starting graduate programs in 2000, and opening doctoral programs in 2013. In Turkey, the progress of the profession continues slowly because of the time elapsed until starting of graduate and postgraduate education. To accelerate the midwifery professional development it is required that the education given as theoretically-practically should be supported with evidence-based research and integrated with science. By the opening of PhD programs, the midwives who gained right to take this education have started to contribute for the development of the profession. A professional midwife should provide evidence-based care using her own clinical expertise while assessing the condition of the pregnant woman and the newborn. The most important source of evidence-based care is the scientific knowledge that emerges as a result of scientific work carried out in the professional field. These studies support innovation, provide guidance and development. In this context, the midwives who have reached PhD level will produce innovations on behalf of professions and increase professional development. In the literature, it is emphasized that increasing the professional power of the profession requires strengthening, standardization, professional knowledge and skills in post graduate education programs. This review is aimed to emphasize that the PhD level of midwives has an important place in contributing to the progress of the midwifery profession.
