ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aimed to determination of presence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) during pregnancy subject in the curriculum of the department of nursing and midwifery. Material and Methods: This research is a descriptive survey study. The study population consists of 195 departments of nursing and midwifery which provide undergraduate education in state and foundation universities in Turkey. The whole universe is included in the study. Although the whole universe was included in the study, a total of 67 chapters were returned. The data were collected with the 8-question questionnaire created by the researchers. The form was sent to the heads of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology nursing and midwifery to the lecturers working in the relevant department. The data were evaluated using descriptive (number, percentage, etc.) statistical values. Ethics committee approval and informed consent form were obtained from the participants in order to conduct the study. Ethics committee approval and informed consent form were obtained from the participants in order to conduct the study. Results: 95.2% of the departments participating in the study are within the faculty, the subject of RLS during pregnancy is not included in the curriculum of most of the departments of nursing (81.0%) and midwifery (88.9%). The average time allocated for lecturing is 12.7±5.6 minutes in the nursing department and 5.0±0.0 minutes in the midwifery department. The definition of RLS, its cause, symptoms findings and nursing care are mostly included in the course content. In 86.2% of nursing departments and 88.9% of midwifery departments, RLS during pregnancy is not discussed in the clinic. In both sections (nursing: 75.9%, midwifery: 88.9%), it was stated that the subject of RLS in pregnancy should be included in the curriculum, while it was stated that it would be sufficient to allocate 40 minutes for nursing and 76 minutes for midwifery. Conclusion: The subject of RLS during pregnancy is not included in the curriculum of most of the nursing and midwifery programs that provide education at undergraduate level in our country and it is not discussed in clinical education. In line with these results, it is recommended to include the subject of RLS in pregnancy in nursing and midwifery degree programs and to discuss it with students in clinical education.
