ABSTRACT
Objective: Scabies has been a great health problem in our country throughout recent years. The disease causes epidemics particularly in overcrowded settings such as schools, geriatric care units, prisons and military wards. Here, the levels of awareness, knowledge and fear of scabies among health care staff working in a geriatric care unit have been evaluated. Material and Methods: A total of 100 subjects working in İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Zübeyde Hanım Geriatric Care Unit and in touch with the geriatric population and/or their fomites were requested to perform a questionnaire consisting of 3 main parts. The 1st part included demographic characteristics such as age, occupation in the facility, gender and education level. The other 2 parts were questionnaires of awareness and fear. Results: Sixty-three of 100 were emergency medical technicians, health caregivers, paramedics, nurses, trainee nurses, physiotherapists; 18 were psychologists, sociologists/social workers and medical officers, health technicians; 19 were cleaners and hair-dressers. The mean awareness score was 26.09±4.6. The level of awareness was high in 50%, moderate in 48% and low in 2% of the staff. The mean fear score was 29.26±3.55. The level of fear was high in 15% of the staff. Although not significant statistically, the awareness scores and the level of fear were relatively higher among subjects with lower education levels. Conclusion: In this study, the total score of awareness and knowledge was high, and the level of fear was low among our geriatric care unit staff. However there are still some unknowns especially for some subtitles such as contamination and prevention, particularly among staff with lower education levels and some occupational groups. Since the staff has an important role in struggling with scabies, which is obviously a more frequent entity, and may lead to epidemics in these units, we concluded that more detailed additional education programmes for the geriatric care unit staff are of critical importance and needed.
