ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this study is aimed to investigate the changes in the auditory perceptions and daily routines of children and adolescents with hearing loss and the anxiety levels of their parents during the pandemic. Material and Methods: A total of 79 families of school-age children with hearing loss were included in the study. The Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance of Children (PEACH) form to assess children's auditory performance, the State-Trait Anxiety Scale-State State (STAI-S) form to assess their families' stress levels, and demographic information form with questions to determine how children with hearing loss and their families were affected by the pandemic and how their daily routine changed was all utilized. The children's PEACH scores before and during the pandemic, changes in their daily routines, and the family's STAIS score were all examined. The relationship between PEACH scores and pandemic effect, STAI-S score, was investigated. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in terms of PEACH scores between before and during the pandemic. 72.2% of families stated their child's sleeping routine had changed, while 30.4% stated their eating routine had changed. It was found that 67.1% of the parents had a high level of anxiety. A negative and moderate relationship was found between how the child was affected during the pandemic and PEACH scores before and during the pandemic. There was no statistically significant relationship between how the family was affected during the pandemic and PEACH scores before and during the pandemic. A negative and weak correlation was found between PEACH scores before and during the pandemic and the STAI-S score. Conclusion: The daily routines children and adolescents with hearing loss have changed during the pandemic, the stress level of their families is high, and both families and children have been negatively affected by the pandemic; however, no short-term change in children's auditory perceptions has been observed. All of these findings highlight the importance of planning and implementing intensive programs to help children with hearing loss improve their auditory perception and behavioral skills.
