ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between music listening habits of university-aged people and their attitudes and their behaviours towards regular physical activity (PA) participation. Material and Methods: The preferred music types and weekly listening durations were recorded. The International Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire (IPAQ) for PA levels, the Physical Activity Barriers Questionnaire (PABQ) for PA barriers and the Cognitive Behavioural Physical Activity Questionnaire (CBPAQ) for PA attitude were used. Results: The data of 237 volunteers with the mean age of 20.34+1.84 years and 66% female (n=157), were analysed in the study. It was found that the three most common music genres that the participants listen were popular music (18.3%), protest music (13.8%) and rock (13.1%). The music listening duration of the participants was increased with female gender (r=0.130, p=0.045) and decreased with education year (r=-0.132, p=0.042), however, was not related to IPAQ (r=0.61, p=0.241), CBPAQ (r=0.050, p=0.440) and PABQ (r=-0.061, p=-0.347). A weak and positive correlation was found between the habit of listening to music and the duration of listening to music during PA (r=0.146, p=0.024). It was noted that listening music during PA had a positive weak relation with IPAQ (r=0.303, p<0.01) and CBPAQ (r=0.273, p<0.01); a negative weak relation with PABQ (r=-0.227, p<0.01). Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that listening to music during PA could positively affect the PA level, while decreasing the PA barrier perception in university-aged people. Pop music could be preferred during PA, unlike general preferences. In order to fully determine the role of music in terms of strategies to increase the PA level in university-aged people, new studies are needed that take into account the intensity of listening to music and PA's conducted without listening to music.
