Determining the Relationship Between Burnout Syndrome in Psychiatric Nurses and Compassion Fatigue

ÖZET
 Amaç: Bu çalışma, psikiyatri hemşirelerinde görülen tükenmişlik sendromu ile merhamet yorgunluğu arasındaki ilişkinin belirlenmesi amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmanın evrenini bir Ruh Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Hastanesinde çalışmakta olan 177 hemşire oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem seçimine gidilmemiştir. Çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden hemşirelerle yüz yüze görüşülerek anketler toplanmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin toplanmasında 'Kişisel Bilgi Formu', 'Maslach Tükenmişlik Ölçeği' ve 'Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği' kullanılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, yüzdelik dağılım, ki kare testi, Student t-testi, Mann-Whitney U testi ve Fisher kesin ki-kare testleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırmada hemşirelerin Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği toplam puan ortalamasının 66,47±6,07 (yüksek) olduğu saptanmıştır. Maslach Tükenmişlik Ölçeği alt boyutları incelendiğinde duygusal tükenme puan ortalamasının 26,52±4,29 (orta), duyarsızlaşma puan ortalamasının 15,90±3,04 (yüksek) ve kişisel başarı puan ortalamasının 16,33±6,66 (yüksek) olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Duygusal tükenme ve duyarsızlaşma ile merhamet yorgunluğu arasında pozitif yönde güçlü bir ilişki saptanmıştır (p˂0,05). Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda, tükenmişliğin alt boyutları olan duygusal tükenme ve duyarsızlaşma ile merhamet yorgunluğunun birbiri ile ilişkili olduğu görülmektedir. Sonuç: Hemşirelerde tükenmişliğin alt boyutları olan duygusal tükenme ve duyarsızlaşma arttıkça merhamet yorgunluğunun arttığı belirlenmiştir.

ABSTRACT
 Objective: The aim of this study; The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between burnout syndrome and compassion fatigue seen in psychiatric nurses. Material and Methods: The universe of the study consists of 177 nurses working in a Mental Health and Diseases Hospital. Sample selection will not be made. Questionnaires were collected through face-to-face interviews with the nurses who agreed to participate in the study. 'Personal Information Form', 'Maslach Burnout Scale' and 'Compassion Fatigue Scale' was used for data collection. The arithmetic means, standard deviation, percentage distributions, chi-square, Student t-test, MannWhitney U test and Fisher Exact Chi-Square was used in the evaluation of data. Results: In the study, it was determined that the mean score of the nurses' compassion fatigue scale was 66.47±6.07 (high). When the sub-dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Scale were examined, it was found that the average score for emotional exhaustion was 26.52±4.29 (medium), the average score for depersonalization was 15.90±3.04 (high), and the average score for personal achievement was 16.33±6.66 (high). A strong positive correlation was found between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and compassion fatigue (p˂0.05). In line with these results, it is seen that the sub-dimensions of burnout, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, are related to compassion fatigue. Conclusion: Compassion fatigue increased as emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, which are sub-dimensions of burnout in nurses, increased.

1. TERMS OF USE

1.1. 4. GENERAL PROVISIONS

4.1. "Turkiye Klinikleri" is completely free to determine which of the services and contents provided in the "SITE" will be charged.

4.2. People benefiting from the services provided by "Turkiye Klinikleri" and using the website can use the "SITE" only according to the law and only for personal reasons. Users have the criminal and civil liability for every process and action they take in the "SITE". Any harm, criminal and civil liability resulted or will result from changes and/or corrections required by "Turkiye Klinikleri" and were not made on time by the "USER"s belongs completely to the users.

4.8. "Turkiye Klinikleri" may give links through the "SITE" to other websites and/or "CONTEXT"s and/or folders that are outside of their control and owned and run by third parties. These links are provided for ease of reference only and do not hold qualification for support the respective web SITE or the admin or declaration or guarantee for the information inside. Being late or failure of performance or non-defaulting of this and similar cases like this will not be the case from the viewpoint of "Turkiye Klinikleri", and "Turkiye Klinikleri" will not have any damage liability for these situations. "Force majeure" term will be regarded as outside of the concerned party's reasonable control and any situation that "Turkiye Klinikleri" cannot prevent even though it shows due diligence. Also, force majeure situations include but not limited to natural disasters, rebellion, war, strike, communication problems, infrastructure and internet failure, power cut and bad weather conditions.

8. LAW AND AUTHORISATION TO FOLLOW

Turkish Law will be applied in practicing, interpreting the hereby "Terms of Use" and managing the emerging legal relationships within this "Terms of Use" in case of finding element of foreignness, except for the rules of Turkish conflict of laws. Ankara Courts and Enforcement Offices are entitled in any controversy happened or may happen due to hereby contract.

9. CLOSING AND AGREEMENT

Hereby "Terms of Use" come into force when announced in the "SITE" by "Turkiye Klinikleri". The users are regarded to agree to hereby contract terms by using the "SITE". "Turkiye Klinikleri" may change the contract terms and the changes will be come into force by specifying the version number and the date of change on time it is published in the "SITE".
