ABSTRACT
Objective: Stuttering is a multifactorial disorder including cognitive, affective linguistic, motor and social dimensions. Anxiety and depression are among the affective factors most of the people who stutter frequently experience. The aim of this study was to investigate the anxiety and depression levels of people who stutter between 18-41 years of age living in Turkey. Material and Methods: Participants of the study include 95 people who stutter seen at ANDİKOM Speech and Language Disorders Center. The correlations among anxiety and depression scores of the participants measured with Beck Anxiety Scale, State/Trait Anxiety Scale and Beck Depression Scale were calculated. Results: The results of the study revealed that there was a positive correlation between Trait Anxiety Scores and Beck Depression Scale scores (r=0.391; p<0.01); and a positive correlation between Beck Anxiety Scale scores and Beck Depression Scale scores (r=0.535; p<0.01). The study also showed a negative relationship between age and Beck Depression Scale scores (r=-0.317; p<0.01) and age and stuttering frequency (r =-0.303; p<0.01), while level of education revealed no significant relationship with any other variable tested. The mean anxiety score of the participants was 17 (moderate) while mean depression score was 13.5 (mild depression). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, individuals who stutter appear to have higher depression and anxiety scores when compared to the public at large in Turkey.
