ABSTRACT
Vitiligo, a skin disease, is a common pigment disorder caused by the loss of functional melanocytes in the skin, causing retention in different parts of the body and patches in the form of white spots. This situation adversely affects the quality of life of the patient. In addition to medical and surgical treatment, therapeutic agents are used in the treatment of vitiligo. Vitamin D is one of them. The basic physiological function of vitamin D is the role of calcium in the regulation of bone metabolism in the human body. It also has cell proliferation, differentiation and functions in the immune system. Vitamin D is an important hormone synthesized in the skin responsible for skin pigmentation. In vitiligo, an autoimmune disease, low vitamin D levels have been observed. Vitamin D, an oil-soluble vitamin, has been determined to increase the amount of tyrosinase enzyme in melanogenesis and cultured human melanocytes with its antiapoptotic properties and growth inhibitory effects on melanocytes have been reported. Vitamin D also reduces the expression of various cytokines that cause vitiligo. Nowadays, when vitamin D is used together with phototherapy and ultraviolet treatment, important results have been obtained in the treatment of vitiligo. As a result, it has been reported that vitamin D supplementation may contribute to the treatment of vitiligo by preventing melanocyte loss. In this review, the role of vitamin D in skin pigmentation and its relationship with vitiligo disease was investigated.
