Material and Methods: The sample of the randomized controlled study consisted of nulliparous women who applied to the maternity unit of a state hospital for vaginal birth. The study was conducted with 80 women who were given emotional support for birth (experimental=40) and who were not given (control=40). Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Versions A and B, and the Women's Perceptions of Supportive Care Given During Childbirth Scale. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the duration of the 3rd stage of labor in the women in the experimental and control groups (p<0.05). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the total mean scores and all subscales of the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Versions A-B and the Women's Perceptions of Supportive Care Given During Childbirth Scale in the pre-test and post-test between the experimental and control groups (p<0.05). In intra-group comparisons, a statistically significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores of the Women's Perceptions of Supportive Care Given During Childbirth Scale in both the experimental and control groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: After given emotional support, the duration of the 3rd stage of labor and fear of childbirth decreased, and women's positive perceptions of childbirth increased. The findings of this study showed that emotional support given during childbirth can contribute to the protection of women's mental health.
