ABSTRACT
Objective: The Mediterranean diet is a diet that has been shown to be effective in preventing many chronic conditions that increase the risk of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of nutritional supplements for virus protection has also become widespread. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the use of nutritional supplements and/or herbal products and their compliance with the Mediterranean diet of university students before and during the COVID19 pandemic. Material and Methods: 517 university students were included in the study. In the web-based questionnaire applied to the students, descriptive information and anthropometric characteristics, as well as the students' attitudes towards nutrition, their use of nutritional supplements and/or herbal products before and during the pandemic, and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED) scores were questioned. Results: It was determined that 61.3% of the participants were studying in departments related to health, 53.1% of them did not change their diet during the pandemic period, 86% thought that adequate and balanced nutrition would positively affect the course of the disease. In addition, it was reported that 40.6% of the students did not use nutritional supplements and/or herbal products before the pandemic and 36.9% during the pandemic. It was determined that the students had moderate adaptation to the Mediterranean diet both before and during the pandemic, and compliance with the Mediterranean diet increased significantly during the pandemic. It was determined that the smoking and alcohol use status of the students before and during the pandemic, and the gender only during the pandemic had a statistically significant effect on the KIDMED score averages. Conclusion: The intake of products such as nutritional supplements and herbal products, which are commonly used by university students, should be evidence-based. Therefore, it should only be recommended by healthcare professionals when indicated. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet, COVID-19 etc. It should be increased to prevent the development of many diseases, including diseases, and to improve the prognosis. Health policies and action plans should be prepared in order to increase healthy eating habits in the society.
