ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the general perfectionism levels of parents of school-age children who stutter (CWS) and children who do not stutter (CWNS), and the levels of self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially predicted perfectionism, which are sub-dimensions of perfectionism and to investigate the relationship between stuttering and parental perfectionism. Material and Methods: A total of 80 people, including parents of 40 children, 20 of whom were parents of children who stutter and 20 of whom were parents of children without any speech disorder, were included in the study. The children's ages ranged from 6.0 to 12.11. Participants completed a demographic information form and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, which assesses general perfectionism and its three sub-dimensions. Results: According to the findings of the study, while there was no significant difference between the perfectionism levels of fathers of CWS and CWNS (p>0.05), the other-oriented perfectionism levels of mothers of CWS were significantly higher than those of mothers of CWNS (p<0.05). In addition, it was found that mothers in the group of parents of CWNS had significantly lower levels of general, self-oriented, and other-oriented perfectionism than fathers (p<0.05). In the group of parents of CWS, there was no significant difference between mothers' and fathers' levels of perfectionism (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the research findings, it is seen that there may be a relationship between stuttering and parental perfectionism. This relationship varies with respect to maternal and paternal factors and different dimensions of perfectionism. Perfectionism continues to be an interesting area as a factor that may have a 2-way interaction with stuttering.
