ABSTRACT
Objective: Biopsy technique is accepted as the gold standard for the determination of muscle fiber type. However, there may be some limitations in terms of applicability and accessibility. Therefore, it would be a great convenience to determine muscle fiber ratio by noninvasive method. The aim of the current study was to examine relationship between estimated percentage of fast twitch fiber for the vastus lateralis and field performance tests. Material and Methods: Twenty male students from faculty of sport science (age: 21.5±2.68 years) were included in this research. Field performance tests consisted of 30-m sprint, active jump and aerobic endurance tests. For the determination of fast-twitch fiber percentage, maximal concentric isokinetic fatigue test was applied to the thigh extensor muscles with 50 repetitions and 180 degrees/sec. The relationship between the estimated percentage of fiber and performance tests was analyzed by Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The 30 m performance was negatively correlated (r−0.664) and countermovement jump performance was positively correlated (r=0.754) with the percentage of fast-twitch muscle fiber. There was a negative correlation between maximal aerobic capacity and percentage of fast-twitch muscle fiber but was not significant (r=−0.285). Conclusion: A significant moderate and high correlation was found between explosive force performance scores and the percentage of vastus lateralis fast-twitch fiber detected by using non-invasive.
